Russian Federation criticises USA decision to call United Nations meeting on Iranian protests

Russian Federation criticises USA decision to call United Nations meeting on Iranian protests

The statement, backed by other nations, carry an implicit criticism of the USA for refusing to acknowledge the Security Council's main responsibility which is maintaining global peace and security.

There has been more than a week of unrest in Iran in which 22 people have died and more than 1,000 arrested, according to Iranian officials.

The French diplomat was blunt when he said that the violations of the demonstrators' rights "do not constitute per se a threat to global peace and security".

Other pro-government demonstrations were held in Shahin Dezh, in West Azarbaijan province bordering Turkey; the city of Semnan, in the northern Semnan Province; and Shadegan, in the southern Khouzestan Province near Iraq.

"Why is the United States, a permanent member of the Security Council and one of the authors of the UN Charter, undermining the authority of the Security Council as the main body responsible for maintaining worldwide peace and security?"

Russian Federation accuses the United States of interfering in Iran's national affairs and maintains the protests are not a matter for the council, which deals with threats to worldwide peace and security.

Khoshroo added that Iran expects all states to condemn such unsafe statements and policies and urge the US government to act responsibly and adhere to the UN Charter and global law. Last month, a large majority of UN members voted for a resolution denouncing the United States' decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the US Embassy there.

"The Iranian regime is now on notice: the world will be watching what you do", Haley told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Iran.

Heated debate took place on the floor of the Security Council at the United Nations headquarters in NY after its 15 members were gathered at the request of the U.S. to discuss the current situation in Iran.

"It is right and proper - indeed, our responsibility.to assess whether a situation like this could become a threat to worldwide peace and security", British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said before the meeting.

He went on to say that also on 3 January, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced the end of anti-Government protests. He pointed out that Trump has a history of making "belligerent" comments about Iran.

Iran is not a member of the Security Council but its ambassador, Gholamali Khoshroo, was invited to participate.

"One U.S. resident took to social media to order the killing of our security forces ... as well as their families, in their homes".

Treasure Secretary Mnuchin said that the Trump administration "will continue to decisively counter the Iranian regime's malign activity, including additional sanctions targeting human rights abuses".

The president's tweets have not called for violence or disruptive acts, but he has commended them.

"No dishonest attempt to call the protesters "puppets of foreign powers" will change that".

The Security Council "rebuffed the U.S.' naked attempt to hijack its mandate", Mr. Zarif wrote on Twitter. The days of pro-government rallies drew crowds in the tens of thousands.
