Smart speakers lead consumer growth

Smart speakers lead consumer growth

"When you need to round up the family in the morning, just say 'Ok Google, broadcast it's time for school!' and your message will broadcast to all Google Assistant-enabled speakers in your home", Alex Duong, Product Manager, Google Home, said in a blog post. "Smart speaker uptake has grown faster than any other consumer technology we've recently encountered, such as AR, VR, or even wearables". The company today has taken wraps off its large booth and unsurprisingly it is mostly focused on the Google Assistant.

"While 2017 has been a banner year for smart speakers in terms of hardware sales, especially for Google and Amazon, smart speakers in 2018 will move beyond hardware, with strategic attempts to monetise the growing installed base in the United States and beyond". In its predictions, Canalys foresees global shipments of smart speakers growing to 56.3 million in 2018.

Following blockbuster holiday sales, it's official: Smart speakers are the new best-selling consumer gadget. "Your Assistant now gives you the power to voice control more than 1,500 compatible smart home devices from over 225 brands", the search engine added. "Vendors have begun offering successful upgrades to their latest models, and a key element driving this stickiness are the smart home partnerships". While not yet as widespread as embedded voice assistant devices, stand-alone DVA devices are used more often and users are more satisfied. Now, those who already own one see the value in having it in their homes-72 percent of smart speaker owners report using it as part of their daily routines and, according to a separate survey, 45 percent said they plan to purchase at least one more smart speaker for their homes.
