The Weeknd Severs Ties with H&M After "Deeply Offensive" Product Photo

The Weeknd Severs Ties with H&M After

One Twitter user wrote, "Here's why your ad has caused outrage: There is painful history of dehumanizing black people by comparing us to monkeys and apes".

The image of the model wearing the hoodie has now been removed from its website, while two others featuring different designs in the same category and modelled by white children remain.

"We sincerely apologize for this image", said an H&M spokesperson.

"You do know that monkey is a known racial slur to black people right?" she added.

One netizen pointed out that the sweatshirt in orange ― with the words "Survival Expert" and "Junior Tour Guide" on it ― was modeled by a white child.

As of yet, the retailer has issued no statement regarding the Weeknd's announcement that he will no longer be working with the company.

The Weeknd said he is severing ties with H&M after it advertised a sweatshirt many said was racist.

Clothing retailer, H&M, has apologised for using a black child to model a hoodie with a slogan deemed to be racist.

"We completely understand and agree with his reaction to the image".

The company apologized in 2013 after coming under fire for selling headdresses in its Canada and United Kingdom stores: "Of course, we never want to offend anybody or come off as insensitive", a statement from a company spokesman read. We will also look into our internal routines to avoid such situations in the future.
