Volkswagen, Uber to deploy Nvidia's technology for self driving

Volkswagen, Uber to deploy Nvidia's technology for self driving

CES showcases the tech trends that will shape the year ahead.

The overall contributions are understood to be relatively equal on all sides and will combine general artificial intelligence solutions with various related technologies meant to power the first commercially available autonomous vehicles in the Far Eastern country. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang announced the new platforms during his Sunday night keynote address at CES. The technology will enable intelligent co-pilot capabilities based on processing sensor data, both inside and outside the vehicle. The system analyzes sensor data from inside and outside of the auto to provide both drivers and passengers with AI assistant technology that recognizes their faces, voices and gestures.

Bets that Nvidia will become a leader in chips for driverless cars, data centers and artificial intelligence have more than doubled its stock price in the past 12 months, making the Silicon Valley company the third-strongest perfomer in the S&P 500 during that time.

The technology will also add facial recognition for unlocking the vehicle from the outside, driver alerts for bicycles, gesture recognition for user controls, natural language understanding for voice control, and gaze tracking for driver distraction alerts.

Drive AR, meanwhile, is geared toward infotainment applications and will essentially fuse computer vision, computer graphics and AI to power augmented reality interfaces inside a vehicle. The company claims its silicon can perform 30 trillions of deep learning operations every second in an extremely energy-efficient manner, requiring only 30W to run. For Nvidia customers, the Pegasus motherboard is pitched as the path to production for fully autonomous vehicles. These "mobility-as-a-service" fleets-a system VW Group is now developing-will initially include smaller self-driving vehicles that people can hail as well as larger vans.

"Volkswagen's work with NVIDIA DRIVE IX technology will make that a reality".

Two Xavier SoCs and two next-gen Nvidia GPUs are used for the new Pegasus AI computing platform announced late past year which Nvidia says is capable of powering Level 5 autonomous vehicles.
