Five things to know about new Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy

Five things to know about new Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy

The Chicago Bears announced the hiring of Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new head coach on Monday, initiating a shuffle among the leadership of the team's offensive for the third-straight season.

A college quarterback at Delaware, Nagy will replace John Fox, who was sacked following three seasons as head coach and a record of 14-34.

Nagy has spent the last five years with the Kansas City Chiefs. He's been Andy Reid's running backs coach since he arrived in Kansas City back in 2013. Nagy was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016, but he did not call plays until Week 13 of this season.

Here are a five things to know about the Chicago Bears' new head coach.

The Bears will introduce Nagy as their 16th head coach in franchise history at a press conference today.

Nagy comes from a long line of successful assistants under Reid, including John Harbaugh, Ron Rivera, Todd Bowles, Sean McDermott, Doug Pederson and Steve Spagnuolo. In November, Reid publicly state that Nagy was the best head coaching prospect to ever work under him.

Nagy's luster took on a new shine late in the season when Reid handed off play calling duties to his young protegé.

The Chiefs, after scoring 21 points in the first half, were shut out afterward and wound up losing 22-21 in the wild-card round. Childress just completed his 19th year in the National Football League and his fifth season with the Chiefs. He should have more freedom to make plays next season. He is not sure if defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will stay. In total he has 37 years of coaching experience on both the collegiate and professional levels.

Nagy did a good job helping Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith.

For starters, Nagy felt more comfortable about the quarterback situation in Chicago with 2017 second-overall draft pick Mitch Trubisky, as opposed to the uncertainty of Colts' oft-injured QB Andrew Luck, which seems pretty reasonable.

Trubisky had plenty of promising moments during his rookie campaign. Smith posted best numbers in his career under the guidance of Matt Nagy with 4,042 passing yards with 26 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions, completing 67% of his passes. He also rushed for 248 yards on 41 carries and two touchdowns. In his defense, the Bears were lacking in established receivers, an area they'll need to address this offseason.
