Google doodle honours Indian-American biochemist

Khorana was born in Raipur, which is Kabirwala in present-day Pakistan.

"Fantastic to see our alumnus Prof Har Gobind Khorana, the pioneering biochemist and Nobel Laureate, being honored today by Google Doodles on what would have been his 96th birthday", the school tweeted this morning.

According to Google, Dr. Khorana was the youngest of five children and was taught to read and write by his father. He studied at the Punjab University in Lahore from where he obtained an M.Sc degree. In 1945, he was awarded a government fellowship that allowed him to go to England and pursue a PhD degree at the University of Liverpool. With a number of scholarships, Khorana went on to earn a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1948. Three years later, he continued on to Switzerland for a postdoctoral year at ETH Zurich, a university known for its contributions to chemistry, physics, and mathematics. In Khorana's biography, Prelog is credited for molding "immeasurably his thought and philosophy towards science, work, and effort".

He was a professor at the University of British Columbia from 1952 to 1960, where he began his work on DNA research.

According to the biography of Khorana, he was married to Swiss national Esther Elizabeth Sibler - on whom the biography showered praises for bringing a "consistent sense of goal ... at a time when he felt out of place everywhere and at home nowhere".

His Nobel in Physiology or Medicine came in 1968, while he was at the University of Wisconsin, and he was jointly awarded with colleagues working independently, Robert Holley and Marshall Nirenberg. During this time he became intrigued with nucleic acids and proteins found in RNA.

-In 1960, he moved to the U.S., where started working in the University of Wisconsin. It was there that he made his Nobel-worthy discovery and became a naturalized American citizen.

-But this was not his only accolade.

-Among his several recognitions, Khorana also received the Lasker Award for basic medical research and the National Medal of Science. He died in November 2011.

His friend Uttam L. RajBhandary, a molecular biology professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said Khorana was drawn to solving tough, critical problems. They had three children - Julia Elizabeth, Emily Anne, and Dave Roy.
