Kia Niro EV Concept Achieves 238 Miles on a Charge

Kia Niro EV Concept Achieves 238 Miles on a Charge

Finally, Kia is showing off some other interesting technologies at CES, many of which will be demonstrated in interactive Niro EV concept interiors.

Aside from the Niro EV, Kia's "Beyond Autonomous Driving" exhibit at CES 2018 will showcase advanced technologies that reflect the direction that the automaker is taking with regard to autonomy and mobility.

Kia vice-chairman Dr. Woong-chul Yang said: "Kia's connected cars will be both boundless and connected and offer a new kind of mobility experience".

Kia's human machine interface supports face and voice recognition that allows the vehicle to recognize who's piloting it, and then adjust the settings to their programmed preferences.

The first assault of its future mobility plans are the Niro EV SUV concept which will spearhead the arrival of 16 electrified vehicles by 2025 and one hydrogen fuel cell vehicle due in 2020.

The Kia Niro EV Concept features a number of advanced driver assistance systems, though not all will make it into the production model, notably its prototype autonomous driving capabilities. The system is front-facing cameras, object recognition technology and speakers mounted on the face of the vehicle.

As for the Niro EV, in concept form the vehicle packs a 200-horsepower electric motor at the front axle and a 64-kilowatt-hour lithium-polymer battery good for 238 miles of range-the same figure as the Chevrolet Bolt EV.

To differentiate it from the standard Niro hybrid and Niro plug-in hybrid, the EV Concept replaces the standard grille with an interactive display and slim LED lights. The safety system uses cameras to monitor for objects and is fitted with speakers to alert people who might be in the vehicle's way. For example, the Niro EV Concept could theoretically limit its maximum power if it recognized a teen driver behind the wheel.

Connected cars are also part of Kia's long-term plans. It will commercialize Level 4 autonomous vehicles in smart cities starting from 2021 as part of a pilot project.

Next up, connected auto technologies will be a staple in every vehicle segment, with the goal to make every single model a connected auto by 2030.

The service has already been launched in Korea but is expected to be rolled out to Europe later in 2018.
