Steve Kerr believes LaVar Ball has become 'the Kardashian of the NBA'

Add Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr to the list of coaches who have recently criticized the media for giving LaVar Ball the type of attention he is getting. He was asked about LaVar Ball after the demonstrative dad told ESPN that the Lakers no longer want to play for coach Luke Walton, a dear Kerr friend and former top assistant with the Warriors.

In a Tuesday morning attempt to advance the ball on Rick Carlisle's dismantling of ESPN's love affair with the eloquently obnoxious LaVar Ball, I asked the Dallas Mavericks coach whether there is a "slippery slope" in his position as the president of the NBA Coaches Association "trying to dictate" content to the network. It's a hard task.

"I'm not meeting with their announcing crew before the game, I'm not doing the in-game interview", Van Gundy said. "I am going to enjoy the night and get some sleep finally and then we got to let [the win] go".

This is a fine line Carlisle is walking, as he's essentially saying coaches should have a say in what journalists cover, and that's obviously not how journalism works. On the other hand, continuing to give Ball these sound bites are only going to fuel his fire even more. "I don't think that's the case".

When pressed if it means he's threatening to withhold access, Van Gundy said: "I'm not denying them access. We're going through that now and went through that previous year". More? Well over 100. Well over 100, many of whom were really talented journalists covering the National Basketball Association.

"This is not a ESPN judgment".

On Monday, Kerr said he was thinking about the recent ESPN layoffs and how the society has moved from "covering the game and getting closer to sensationalized news".

Kerr's comparison to the Kardashians is spot on, as the Ball's even boast their own reality TV show nowadays. But if you package that irrational nonsense with glitter and ribbon, people are going to watch.

"I talked to people in the media this year". Somewhere - I guess [LaVar] is in Lithuania - LaVar Ball is laughing at all of us. It doesn't matter if there's any substance involved with an issue, it's just can we make it really interesting for no apparent reason?

"There's nothing interesting about that story [LaVar's comments about Walton]". "Just one win. We gotta play that way against, no offense, better teams and really prove it". Earlier in the season, he said that Walton didn't know how to coach his son, No. 2 overall pick Lonzo Ball. This is not a condemnation of ESPN. "It" not. It's societal issue.
