32 missing after Iranian tanker collides with Chinese ship, spills oil

This frame grab taken from Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on January 8, 2018 shows smoke and flames coming from a burning oil tanker at sea off the coast of eastern China.

A tanker has collided with a bulk carrier in the East China Sea, leaving 32, the entire tanker crew, missing. The Crystal's 21 Chinese crew were rescued.

The environmental impact was not immediately clear, and the Chinese government did not give details as to the size of the spill.

In pic: The Panama-registered Sanchi tanker is seen ablaze in open waters, after colliding with a Chinese bulk ship.

State-run China Central Television reported Sunday evening that the tanker was still floating and burning, and that oil was visible in the water.

Rastad said poor weather and huge plumes of smoke rising from the tanker were making search-and-rescue efforts hard. However, it is safe to say that the disaster has the potential to be the worst since 1991, when 260,000 tonnes of oil leaked off the Angolan coast.

A foreign ministry spokesman, Lu Kang, said the conditions Monday were not favorable for search and rescue work. That's equivalent to just under 1 million barrels worth around $60 million based on current global crude oil prices.

(NITC), according to the UN-run International Maritime Organization. National Iranian Tanker describes itself as operating the largest tanker fleet in the Middle East.

The tanker's crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis has been missing since the collision late Saturday.

"We have no information on their fate", he told the news agency. "There is an oil slick and we are pushing forward with rescue efforts".

The Sanchi, owned by National Iranian Tanker Co, was en route to South Korea when the collision happened.

An Iranian tanker that has been burning for almost two days after colliding with a bulk carrier is at risk of exploding or sinking according to Chinese state media.

Hanwha Total purchased a total of about 64 million barrels of condensate in the January-November period past year, of which 39.4 million barrels came from Iran, according to the state-run Korea National Oil Corp. data compiled by Bloomberg. Total did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The incident also marked the first major maritime incident involving an Iranian tanker since the lifting of worldwide sanctions against Iran in January 2016. In August 2016, an Iranian-owned tanker collided with a container ship in the Singapore Strait with no injuries or environmental contamination.
