Former Browns HC Mike Pettine to Become Packers Defensive Coordinator

Former Browns HC Mike Pettine to Become Packers Defensive Coordinator

The Green Bay Packers settled on a successor to defensive coordinator Dom Capers with the hiring of former Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday night. The Browns fired Pettine after a poor 2015, finishing with a 10-22 record.

Pettine had a top-10 defense in each of his five seasons as a coordinator, including first (2009), third (2010), fifth (2011) and eighth-place (2012) rankings with the Jets and a 10th-place showing with the Bills in 2013.

Pettine is 51 years old and like many McCarthy hires, a native of Pennsylvania.

Mike Pettine, now 51 years old, wasn't employed by an National Football League team in 2017 but he did spend the season with the Seattle Seahawks studying their defense.

Pettine also worked under Ryan with the, for whom Ryan was the defensive coordinator.

The blitz-heavy 3-4 scheme Pettine employs is similar to Capers', which should give the Packers defense a slightly easier time adjusting to his system.

In looking to continue adding experience to his staff, head coach Mike McCarthy has now apparently settled on former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin to be his new offensive coordinator.

His one year in Buffalo was another top 10 finish.

Apart from Pettine, the Packers also interviewed three of Capers' assistants - linebackers coach Winston Moss, cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt and safeties coach Darren Perry - for the job.
