Magnitude 7.6 earthquake hits in Caribbean north of Honduras; tsunami advisory canceled

Magnitude 7.6 earthquake hits in Caribbean north of Honduras; tsunami advisory canceled

A 7.6-magnitude natural disaster rocked an island archipelago 150 kilometres off the coast of Honduras late Tuesday, setting off regional tsunami advisories which were later cancelled. Tsunami warnings were put into effect after the natural disaster struck, but were ultimately canceled.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at a preliminary magnitude of 7.6.

Tsunami centres issued advisories for Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands as well as on the coasts of Mexico and Central America, warning that sea levels could rise from 1ft to 3ft (0.3m to 1m) above normal, but no tsunami materialised. People near the coast of those nations should seek higher ground immediately.

Honduran President Juan Orlando tweeted, "In face of the quake registered in our country, we have activated the emergency system, please remain calm, report any emergency to @ 911Honduras".

The epicenter was located 202 kilometres from the Honduran town of Barra Patuca, and 245 kilometres from the municipality of Puerto Lempira (Honduras).

The tsunami warning were in effect for two hours and then the advisories were withdrawn.

The Ministry of the Navy issued a tsunami warning, which was estimated to reach the coast of Quintana Roo at 23:15 hrs.

The temblor was only 6.2 miles deep.

In May 2009, a magnitude 7.3 quake occurred along the Swan Island transform fault approximately 300 km west of the January 9, 2018 event.
