Pirates trade pitcher Gerrit Cole to Astros

Gerrit Cole won't be a Yankee after all.

In a move that shakes the ice off the hot stove, the Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly traded star pitcher Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros. The Astros would appear set to open the season with a rotation of Dallas Keuchel, Justin Verlander, Cole, Lance McCullers and Charlie Morton if the trade is completed.

Cole was drafted as the first overall selection by the Pirates in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

In five years with the Pirates, Cole has a 59-42 record with a 3.50 ERA, averaging 156 innings a season in 127 starts.

Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole delivers a pitch during the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on September 23, 2017 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His best season came in 2015 when he went 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 32 starts.

The report comes after weeks of speculation that Cole could be headed to the New York Yankees.

Right now the Yankees have Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia and Jordan Montgomery in their rotation.
