Toyota and Mazda to build $1.6 billion joint plant in Alabama

Toyota and Mazda to build $1.6 billion joint plant in Alabama

Toyota had originally planned to build a new Corolla plant in Mexico, but after the joint venture plans were announced in August, Toyota changed course and chose to build the Tacoma pickup at the plant in Mexico and the new Corolla at the new USA plant.

After their announced manufacturing partnership in the US last August, Toyota Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp. decided on the site of their $1.6 billion joint production plant. Production is expected to begin by 2021.

It says Ivey will be joined by other state, local and company officials.

In September, Daimler said it would invest $1 billion to expand its Alabama Mercedes-Benz plant to start building electric sport-utility vehicles there from about 2020.

"Their decision to locate this new facility in Huntsville is a testament to the talented workforce in our state".

Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda and Mazda Motor President Masamichi Kogai bow at a joint news conference in Tokyo, Japan August 4, 2017.

"Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla cars for U.S".

Alabama's governor made it official on Wednesday: The southern state has won the competition to snag a massive Toyota-Mazda manufacturing plant, beating out North Carolina.

Toyota and Mazda's decision to build their joint USA auto plant in Alabama still benefits Kentucky even though the Japanese companies resisted Gov. Matt Bevin's appeals to locate the plant in the Bluegrass State, according to Bevin's economic development cabinet. They also announced small capital tie-ups, with Toyota gaining 5.05 percent of Mazda and Mazda getting 0.25 percent of Toyota.

But Alabama had history and a parts supply chain on its side.

Workers at the plant are expected to build 300,000 vehicles per year and produce the Toyota Corolla compact auto starting in 2021.

Most of Toyota's USA plants are in the South, and all are non-union.

"With this announcement, our world changes overnight", Battle said.

Alabama is the fifth largest producer of cars and light trucks nationally and stands at the center of the growing Southeastern automotive region with a strong automotive presence including Toyota's engine plant in Huntsville.

The news website AL.com reports that there are 57,000 Alabama residents employed in the industry, with more than 160 companies comprising the supplier chain.

"In a single generation, Alabama has become a powerhouse in the auto industry, and the Toyota-Mazda joint-venture manufacturing facility will provide another potent catalyst for sustained growth in the sector", said Greg Canfield, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. "We fully expect this to add more fuel to Kentucky's already historic rate of automotive investment".
