U.S. media: Trump could be interviewed

U.S. media: Trump could be interviewed

"The White House is not going to comment on communications with the special counsel out of respect for the special counsel and process", Sanders responded when asked about the reports.

"And in theory, everybody tells me I'm not under investigation".

Trump has always been cagey about sharing details of his finances, famously refusing to release his tax returns during his presidential campaign and since, and Wolff has indicated the topic is a subject that is now worrying White House insiders. After all, he has a long history of lying under oath.

Flynn pleaded guilty in December to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his conversation with a Russian official in 2016.

But now that Mueller has expressed an interest in interviewing Trump himself, according to multiple reports, Trump's legal team is having second thoughts.

Without a skilled prosecutor to press him, Trump admitted in an interview with NBC's Lester Holt that he had Russian Federation in mind when he fired FBI Director James B. Comey.

That occurred last May.

The Washington Post also reports that Trump's lawyers are "reluctant to allow him to sit down for open-ended, face-to-face questioning" with Mueller.

In other words, that's likely what Trump's lawyers are trying to avoid with a Mueller interrogation - Trump accidentally telling the truth, or Trump simply making stuff up.

The special counsel's office declined to comment on the USA media reports. "The odds of prosecutors agreeing to written responses are somewhere between infinitesimally small and zero". Mueller deputy James Quarles, who oversees the White House portion of the special counsel investigation, also attended. The book notes, for instance, that Trump endlessly repeats himself in private meetings.

Trump's lawyers reportedly hope to learn exactly what categories of questions Trump would face.

U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian Federation interfered in the election to try to help Mr Trump win.

Mr Mueller's probe so far has led to two Trump associates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and campaign aide George Papadopoulos, pleading guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.

If Trump turns out to be a target of the investigation and he's publicly attacking and smearing a key witness, that could be used against him legally.

It also explains why, just days before Christmas, more than 40 former United States attorneys and moderate Republicans sent two separate letters to the president warning him against any attempt to impede or dismiss Mueller or members of his inquiry team, declaring how "critical it is to the interests of justice and public trust to ensure that those charged with conducting complex investigations are allowed to do their jobs free from interference or fear of reprisal".
