Apple says all Macs and iOS devices affected by chip flaws

Apple says all Macs and iOS devices affected by chip flaws

Spectre affects all modern processors and while it is more hard to exploit, it is also more hard to defend against.

If hackers manage to get software running on one of these chips, they can grab data from other software running on the same machine.

"Another big blow for Apple with most iPhone and Macs at risk from Spectre chip security flaw, shortly after a major issue with Apple being neglectful to their customers with knowingly degrading performance on older devices supposedly due to battery issues". If you run Windows Update and it does not list a patch made available on Jan 3, 2018, it's likely your antivirus software is not yet compatible with this patch.

Apple is scrambling to work-around a massive security flaw in a chip found on nearly every device. "This is big news because it's going to affect every device made in the last 20-30 years". Meltdown appears to be specific to Intel chips.

Dr Yuval Yarom from the University of Adelaide's School of Computer Science, and Data61, is part of an global team that has reported on security vulnerabilities in Intel processors made over the last two decades, which could affect computers, mobile phones and cloud servers.

The two hardware bugs discovered can be exploited to allow the memory content of a computer to be leaked. Or they could trick you into visiting a website that moves code onto your machine. In the meantime, criminal actors and nation states could further develop the Spectre vulnerability, making attacks easier to execute.

Spectre shares similarities to Meltdown, but is much more sophisticated and wide-reaching. Although Google Project Zero spearheaded the effort, most of the researchers involved are independent of Google. However, now that Meltdown and Spectre are public knowledge, the chances may increase. All the normal security advice still applies: watch for phishing attacks, don't click on unusual e-mail attachments, don't visit sketchy websites, patch your systems immediately, and generally be careful on the Internet. You probably won't notice that performance hit once Meltdown is patched, except maybe in backup programs and networking applications.

In other words: to protect yourself from Spectre Variant 1 attacks, you need to rebuild your applications with countermeasures.

Gerry Grant, chief ethical hacker at the Scottish Business Resilience Centre and manager of Curious Frank Cyber Services, said: "The key thing that everyone should be doing with real urgency is to ensure their devices have the latest security updates installed". New Android software will roll out January 5, and Google Chrome will update January 23, according to Google.

The company recommends that users ensure their browser is kept up to date, and that all operating system and security software is kept current.

Your operating system and apps typically have a button you can click to check for software updates. It's an analogous problem to vulnerabilities in the once-dominant Microsoft Windows operating system - or, in the agricultural world, to a disease affecting a widely used crop variety, like the preponderant but under-threat Cavendish banana. All computers - desktops, laptops, mobile phones and cloud servers - are vulnerable because of two processor flaws called Spectre and Meltdown that were brought to light last week.

Apple will release patches in its Safari browser to help defend against Spectre "in the coming days".

Apple has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 to help defend against Meltdown.

Since the news of these exploits has come out, AMD stock has skyrocketed while Intel's has dipped significantly. The difference this time is that it's not software that's to blame.

"Brian's sale is unrelated", said Intel in a statement. Intel expects to issue updates for 90 percent of processor products introduced within the same time period by the end of the week.
