Google buys United Kingdom start-up Redux

Google buys United Kingdom start-up Redux

According to a recent article by Bloomberg, late past year Google sneakily picked up a United Kingdom -based startup called Redux that was working on some snazzy tech which can turn surfaces-like the screen on a phone or tablet-into speakers, and even provide more focused haptic effects. If replaced, that could leave more space for a larger battery or other components: even, perhaps, the return of the 3.5mm headphone jack, were Google so inclined. The transfer of shares between NVF Tech Limited, the holders of Redux and Google was confirmed on the 13th of December, last year.

Like other major technology companies, Google acquires small startups all the time.

On August 17, 2005 it acquired Android Inc for $50 million (£37 million).

On Wednesday night, a report revealed on Bloomberg quietly that Google acquisition of "Redux" could have major implications down the road.

A spokesperson for Google refused to comment on the price of the acquisition or any further details. This kind of imitates the sensation that makes it feel like users are actually pushing buttons or adjusting sliders on a device's display. I am not sure but the display-speaker integration may also help Google improve the haptic feedback on their phones. The sound quality is said to be "decent".

Though Redux's website has been shut down, you can check out a web archive of the site where the company explains its technology and mentions that it has 177 total patents, with 115 of them granted. The same controlled vibrations could also be used to deliver haptic feedback through the display. The startup was backed by Arie Capital.

Google has acquired a United Kingdom startup that can turn mobile device displays into speakers.

This appears to be the latest in a string of takeovers from the tech conglomerate.
