CES Loses Power on the Second Day of the Convention

CES Loses Power on the Second Day of the Convention

Earlier today, CES 2018 experienced a blackout that lasted about two hours, leaving exhibitors and attendees literally in the dark.

But the tech with perhaps the most potential and anticipation will not even launch here for a year or more, 5G wireless internet.

The world's biggest consumer electronics show has been switched off with a power outage shutting power to the main Central Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Centre (LVCC) during the annual CES show. "Also get outside on this attractive Las Vegas day and check out Central and South Plaza".

The power outage is the first for the trade show, according to Jeremy Handle, a spokesperson with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

With the show's biggest exhibitors inside the Central Hall this is a multi-million dollar outage on many levels. "We are working hard to resolve this and appreciate your patience", the event's official Twitter account said.

CES Loses Power on the Second Day of the Convention

The irony was not lost on numerous exhibitors, as companies went on Twitter to join the hosts of users cracking jokes about the CES blackout.

A few of the most exciting items Business Insider saw coming out of CES this year included the $4,000 Peloton Tread, a high-end treadmill, Samsung's QLED displays, the Skagen's Falster smartwatch, which runs Android Wear 2.0, and Google's smartwatch operating system.

Initial reports about the power outage began appearing on Twitter around 11:14 a.m. PT, but the lights turned back on sometime around 1:00 p.m. PT. Power in the South Hall was restored within minutes, and power has now been fully restored to all areas.

NV Energy, the region's power supplier, hasn't responded to requests for comments. "If our extension cord went over there we'd be out of power".

CES said in a statement that the outage was caused by "condensation from heavy rainfall" that sparked a flashover on one of the building's transformers. Security personnel evacuated attendees from the affected areas at the time.
