Southport plans MLK, Jr. Day events

Theater performances, volunteer opportunities, parades, lectures and more will mark Martin Luther King Jr.

The city of Auburn Hills will be hosting a community-service focused event in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

55 years ago Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his now famous "I Have A Dream Speech".

The church also will hold a 9:30 a.m. Sunday program presented by Benedictine University history professor Vincent Gaddis at its learning center.

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in celebrating and promoting the worth of every human being", the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee said in announcing this year's events. Contact Jetson Grimes with questions or to register at 941-780-4060.

Sunday: Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 2601 Cocoanut Ave., will begin immediately following the breakfast. The Rev. Avan M. Odom, pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church in Warren, will deliver the message. United Blood Services is the non-profit community blood center that fulfills 100 percent of the blood transfusion needs in 14 of 15 Arizona counties, including Coconino, Yavapai, Navajo, Apache, Mohave and Maricopa. Dr. Watson's lecture is the first in the museums 2018 Lecture Series. The breakfast is open to the public, and is hosted by Auburn University's Office of Inclusion and Diversity, the Office of University Outreach and the East Alabama Chapter of the National Forum for Black Administrators.
