Chief: Murder suspect who shot at NC officers 'ambushed us'

"He ambushed us", Police Chief Kerr Putney was quoted as telling reporters at a late-night media briefing.

The police chief said one officer was shot in the leg and was taken to a hospital for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

The suspect, 23-year-old Jonathan Jarquise Bennett, is still missing and should be considered armed and unsafe, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said a man is on the run following a deadly shooting in west Charlotte.

The shootout came about six hours after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced they were searching for Bennett as the suspect in the killing of the mother of Bennett's 2-month-old baby. The daughter was later found safe.

"Unfortunately, some use that against us", Putney said.

"Times like this make you appreciate people who voluntarily put their lives on the line to keep us safe", Putney said, emphasizing that officers have a "dangerous job".

Effective 5 p.m. Friday, police began "controlled access" to the headquarters, the department said.

"The only thing I could think about was to take cover", Brown reported on the station's 11 p.m. newscast. "I've never seen no aggression out of him", said Rahshawn Johnson. I looked and saw flashes from a gun. Bennett ambushed the officers with gunfire and injured at least one.

The Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were properly followed, which is standard protocol for an officer-involved shooting.

Later, another officer got on the radio and told uninvolved officers that they should stop hurrying to the scene: "Slow the traffic", he said.
