Former Raiders Head Coach Returning to Join Gruden's Staff

Former Raiders Head Coach Returning to Join Gruden's Staff

Following the presser, several Hall of Famers and alumni shared their thoughts about what Gruden will bring to the table.

The 53-year-old originally joined Oakland in 2007, serving as the team's offensive line coach in 2007 and the first portion of 2008 before taking over as head coach during the latter season after Lane Kiffin was sacked.

The Oakland Raiders have their head coach their new head coach place for the long-term future with Jon Gruden agreeing to a 10-year deal with the team.

Cable had been the Seahawks' offensive line coach and assistant head coach from 2011 until Wednesday, when he was sacked.

On the field, Gruden will take over for Jack Del Rio after the latter was sacked following a 6-10 season.

The Rooney Rule means teams have to interview at least one minority candidate before making a coaching hire, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the Raiders satisfied the requirement by interviewing Tee Martin and Bobby Johnson.

Cable returning to the Raiders seemed highly unlikely after late owner Al Davis detailed Cable's misgivings in a post-firing press conference.

In August 2009, Cable reportedly was involved in a physical altercation with defensive assistant Randy Hanson that resulted in Hanson suffering a broken jaw.

In November 2009, an ESPN report cited two women - an ex-wife and former girlfriend of Cable- as stating Cable struck them during their relationships. It's also clear that the Raiders got their man in Cable. He was replaced as head coach by Hue Jackson.

Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Tom Cable walks on the field before an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, in Seattle. Marshawn Lynch had some of his best seasons running in Cable's zone schemes. He finished the season with 891 yards but is not necessarily a lock to return next season.

However, after Seattle went just 9-7 and missed the playoffs for the first time since Cable's first season in 2011 this year, the Seahawks fired Cable on Wednesday.
