Pakistan, US must work together to defeat terrorism, says Aizaz

Pakistan, US must work together to defeat terrorism, says Aizaz

Pakistan's army chief told a top US general the nation "felt betrayed" by criticism that it was not doing enough to fight terrorism, the Pakistani military said on Friday, after US President Donald Trump accused Pakistan of "lies and deceit".

Should he become Pakistan's prime minister, Khan said "yes we would talk", referring to Trump, but added that the USA dishonors the memory of thousands of Pakistan's soldiers who died battling insurgents in its tribal regions, as well as that of tens of thousands of Pakistanis who died in terrorist attacks.

A security aid of $2billion to Pakistan was suspended by Trump's administration last week over these accusations.

Trump's tweet infuriated Pakistani officials and caught the rest of the USA administration off guard.

The US military's Central Command did not comment on the content of their conversation.

'Pakistan is strengthening border controls unilaterally but if Afghanistan genuinely feels affected from Pakistan, bilateral border management must be Kabul's top priority as well, ' the U.S. general was told.

"We value mutual understanding of interests and concerns that we need to consider that might lead to a positive path forward", Thomas told AFP. After suspending military aid, United States has assured Pakistan that no unilateral action on its territory is being planned.

The US General acknowledged the recent actions taken by Pakistan for the hospitality of Afghan refugees and agreed that both countries stand to gain from cooperative engagement.

Some U.S. and Afghan officials anxious that Pakistan would retaliate by no longer sharing intelligence or raising the costs for U.S. -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces to use Pakistani air and land corridors into Afghanistan.

In 2016, a USA drone killed the then-leader of the Taliban, Mullah Akhtar Mansour, in the southwestern province of Baluchistan, prompting protests from Islamabad of a violation of sovereignty. Currently, there are about 14,000 USA forces in Afghanistan.

Pakistan initially feared that Trump would launch a strike in Pakistan - similar to the 2011 raid to capture Osama bin Laden outside Islamabad - and put its forces on alert the day the aid suspension was announced.

Also in question is nearly $1 billion of U.S. military equipment that has allowed Pakistan access to advanced military technology. So far, Pakistan has not done so.
