Sex Offender Allowed To Finish College Before Continuing Sentence

Sex Offender Allowed To Finish College Before Continuing Sentence

The 21 year old Neurauter was sentenced to 90 days in jail last week after admitting to sexual interference involving a 13 year old Kamloops girl.

According to CBC, the university said it is reviewing Neurauter's status.

Marshall says Neurauter has not been on campus since Tuesday, and has been advised not to return for the remainder of the term. However, a judge delayed the start of his jail time so he could finish his semester at the university.

He served the first day of punishment on January 4 but then the judge delayed his sentence to May 4 so that the sexual predator could finish his semester.

The woman behind the petition says she's disappointed in the university.

Kaitlyn Casswell started an online petition to expel Neurauter from the university.

Speaking from Kamloops, she said it was "unjust" that Neurauter was allowed to finish the current semester.

"They're missing an opportunity to set the tone on sexual violence, and I think they can do more than just say they've asked him to stay away and they're not expelling him".

She also said the court-imposed publication ban - enacted to protect the identity of the victim - prevents all of the facts about the case from being known.

University of Calgary students are calling on the school to expel a sex offender who obtained nude photos of a 13-year-old girl, then blackmailed her into silence by threatening to release the photos to her family.

"I feel for the safety of other students that you have a sexual offender attending your university", the mother, whose identify is protected as to not identify the victim, told the CBC.

Both have read threats made against him online, and she said university staff member told her students are waiting in classes in which he's enrolled to see if he shows up.

During his sentencing, it was heard that the student - who is studying for a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry - had solicited nude images from the girl.

"Of course he has regrets and remorse, but he was making an effort to not only acknowledge that, but put this behind him".

And the U of C is discussing the possibility of distance learning with Neurauter, she said.

On Thursday, U of C officials confirmed they had asked Neurauter not to return to the school for the remainder of the semester.

"It discourages victims from coming forward as perpetrators are accommodated and their actions are excused for the sake of not impeding their 'potential'".

Marshall says that the school is in contact with Neurauter to determine what sort of alternate arrangements can be made to fulfill his schooling.

"On the other hand, expelling a student is a very serious matter and if that is not required for the safety of the students, that may be too harsh a penalty".

"I think we're finding a mid-way ground with the university".

He said he's not surprised the latest case is drawing so much outrage at a time when accusations of sexual assault and harassment have been toppling the careers of some of the most powerful men in Hollywood, the press and politics.

"It's about providing justice to all concerned in this very hard situation".
