Has a 'severe' flu season reached its peak in Idaho? Maybe not

Has a 'severe' flu season reached its peak in Idaho? Maybe not

Last flu season, 72 people died from flu-related illnesses in Idaho, more than triple the average of 23 deaths during each of the previous four flu seasons.

"The H3N2 strain that's circulating is a little bit harder of a virus too, it's robust", said Casie Stoughton, Director of City of Amarillo Public Health. The OSDH wants to remind Oklahomans that everyone is at risk for influenza and the flu vaccination is recommended for anyone 6 months of age and older.

"People are going back to work and back to school after the holidays, and they're spreading these germs", said Lynn Sutfin, spokeswoman for the department.

To protect the family's privacy, the children's hometown, county and gender are not being released. The CDC's latest report said that the United States is officially in a flu epidemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday that flu is now widespread in every state except Hawaii.

Numerous patients taken ill across Scotland are suffering from a particularly serious strain of flu believed to have originated in Australia.

While the Glasgow and Belfast branches both had some vaccine in stock, a backlog of patients meant the supplies were accounted for and no new patients would be able to receive them during a walk-in-appointment, they said.

After getting off to a quick start, this year's flu season is shaping up to be particularly nasty. The vaccine seems to very effective for the strain that's most prevalent in the state right now, A (H3). Many health plans cover the cost of the vaccine with no copay.

"A number of those children have been admitted to the hospital, where they've required hospitalization for assistance with breathing", Dr. Andi Shane told the station. There have already been 49 outbreaks reported this season.

As much as possible, avoid people who are sick.

According to CDC director Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, "While our flu vaccines are far from ideal, they are the best way to prevent getting sick from the flu, and it is not too late to get one". (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine).

"If you keep about a three foot distance we know that the particles that are transmitted when you cough and sneeze, gravity pulls them down where you're not as likely to be exposed", he said.
