UK party suspends leader's girlfriend over racist remarks about Meghan Markle

UK party suspends leader's girlfriend over racist remarks about Meghan Markle

Jo Marney, 25, whose relationship with the 53-year-old party chief emerged earlier this month, sent texts to a pal that continued offensive comments about Meghan and black people.

The messages show that, asked what was "wrong" with black people, she wrote: "Ugly".

"Her words were blatantly racist and there should be no room for that in UKIP", wrote party member Jack Penny on Twitter, after calling Marney the "Wallis Simpson of UKIP", referring to the American divorcee with alleged Nazi sympathies that King Edward VIII married after abdicating.

Marney was suspended by Ukip after being alerted to the messages.

Ukip leader Henry Bolton is already facing calls for his resignation after he left his 42-year-old wife without warning.

Henry Bolton walks on the beach following morning TV interviews at their autumn conference on September 30, 2017 in Torquay, England.

Mr Bolton told a young party member online, who urged that Ms Marney should have her membership removed: "Jo was suspended immediately upon us receiving this information".

This development prompted UKIP chairman Paul Oakden to announce that Marney's membership in the party has been suspended pending an investigation.

UKIP activist and former leadership candidate Ben Walker said Mr Bolton should go before he destroyed UKIP's "political family".

She said: "The opinions I expressed were deliberately exaggerated in order to make a point and have, to an extent, been taken out of context".

Peter Whittle, leader of Ukip's delegation in the London Assembly, also called for Ms Marney to be "expelled altogether" for the "disgraceful remarks".

If he is ousted then the party will have to elect its fifth leader in just 18 months.

Since these text messages were disclosed, Marney apologised and said that they were taken out of context.

A UKIP spokesman told the Press Association Ms Marney had been suspended from the party.

"They were never meant to be put in the public domain and I'd like to take this opportunity to offer my honest and deepest apologies to anyone I've hurt and for the distress and embarrassment I've caused my family, friends and the party".

'They were never meant to be put in the public domain and I'd like to take this opportunity to offer my honest and deepest apologies to anyone I've hurt and for the distress and embarrassment I've caused my family, friends and the party'. 'I have disappointed them all and let myself down. "I can not sufficiently express my regret and sadness at having done so".

Bolston's private life noneless became the subject of an internal party investigation, with a meeting of UKIP's national executive committee planned for next Thursday to discuss fallout from the relationship, as British newspaper The Times reported.
