Ashampoo Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker

Ashampoo Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker

Whereas the Meltdown flaw is specific to Intel, Spectre has been issued by many processor manufacturers.

AMD, in a corporate blog post, admitted that the two variants of the Spectre vulnerabilities identified by Google Project Zero apply to its processors, although it said the third vulnerability, known as Meltdown, is not applicable.

An AMD spokesperson said in a statement that the company does not need to release any firmware or OS updates to address the Spectre and Meltdown issues. They are similar in the sense that they exploit flaws in CPU architecture dating back decades to extract user information both from local applications on a device or, in the case of Spectre, from websites through a web browser.

But fixes are not happening smoothly. "Within the next week, we intend to offer a representative set of data for mobile and desktop platforms that were launched within the past five years".

However, the Rosen Law Firm on Wednesday announced that it had filed a class action suit against Intel, alleging a failure to disclose the design flaw. "It doesn't surprise me a lot that there would be some hiccups".

Part of the issue lies in technical debt accumulated by large organizations. Most notably, the company will issue microcode updates for Ryzen and Epyc CPUs as a preventive measure against one of the Spectre variants.

For recent chip flaws, once the patches are applied, developers have to rewrite code to support the patch.

Williams claimed the industry as a whole likely wouldn't be "willing to settle for slower processors that might be vulnerable unless there are proof of concept exploits available". A report from the Wall Street Journal says that some of the patches Intel has released have caused problems of their own.

This is according to an open letter from Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, to technology industry leaders, in which he promised "transparent and timely communications" with customers following the disclosure of security flaws in its microchips.

"These bugs in the hardware can enable hackers using malicious programs to steal sensitive data which is now processed on the computer".

He said Intel will also add incremental funding for academic and independent research into potential security threats.

Williams expects security experts to double down on this field of research. "That a single flaw, much less two, affecting almost all of the world's computers could expose society, even if only theoretically, to these risk exposures on such a massive scale is concerning". The company says Linux vendors are distributing patches to their users, as well.
