Ford Mustang Bullitt revives a star of the screen for the street

Ford Mustang Bullitt revives a star of the screen for the street

Pretty cool stuff, huh? Bob Kiernan is committed to keeping the 1968 Bullitt in the family, even though the auto is estimated to be worth more than $4 million. Making this all the more special is the fact that the woman behind the wheel is none other than Molly McQueen, granddaughter of Bullitt himself. The Editorial department is independent of Cars.com's advertising, sales and sponsored content departments.

"This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool", Darrell Behmer, chief designer of the Mustang, said in a statement. Similar to the Mustang in the movie, the limited edition vehicle has no badges, spoilers, or stripes.

Mind you, it's not hard to be cool in a vehicle with understated chrome accents around front windows and special black grille, classic 19 inch aluminium wheels, red painted Brembo brake callipers and - just like the original - no exterior badging at all other than a Bullitt logo on the dummy fuel cap in the centre of the rear panel.

It's unknown if any Mustang Bullitts will be allocated to the United Kingdom or how many of this special edition vehicle will be produced. The wheels are 19-inch torque thrust units and the grille is black on both body color choices.

The Bullitt uses the GT's 5.0-liter V8, but on this occasion it has been enhanced to more than 475 horsepower - there's a new open-air induction system and 87mm throttle, along with the intake manifold from the Shelby GT350.

It was all very mysterious, and a little confusing, but Ford North America president Raj Nair clarified to Fox News that the vehicle in question will be battery-powered SUV, with a lot of Mustang DNA.

The green paint, the wheels, the functional yet elegant leather interior, it all speaks to that understated cool that Steve McQueen had in spades and is why the auto itself has become just as iconic. Options include a Recaro seat upgrade and a "Bullitt Electronics Package" comprised of nav, memory seats, an upgraded sound system and blind spot warning, in case you're unsure where that Charger you need to ram off the road is lurking. It was long presumed lost, but the 1968 Mustang GT fastback in fact changed hands a few times, an ultimately was inherited by Sean Kiernan in 2014.
