Facebook is Making a Big Change to Your News Feed

Facebook is Making a Big Change to Your News Feed

Mr Zuckerberg is prepared to see the time people spend on Facebook and other "measures of engagement" go down.

Now it's his personal goal for 2018 to fix the site and weed out hate, abuse, meddling by malicious nation states, while also making it more "meaningful" and less depressing for users. Another common take among those surveyed was that Facebook could increase the advertising load on Instagram, which they said is now under-monetized relative to the core platform.

So far, politicians in both the European Union and the United States have been pressuring Facebook to increase, rather than decrease its censorship.

He added: "This is understandable as brands and publishers have spent a lot of money over the years to build a presence on the platform and supplied Facebook's walled-garden with content to fuel its News Feed".

"Liking is not the same as commenting".

Facebook is losing its users to other social media websites and applications like Instagram, Snapchat and even Twitter. Instead, Facebook wants people to see more stuff from friends, family and other people they are likely to have "meaningful" conversations with - something the company laments has been lost in the sea of videos, news stories (real and fake), and viral quizzes on which "Big Bang Theory" character you are.

Facebook has pushed video in its news feed in recent years, prompting many publishers to hire staff in this field in what was termed a "pivot to video".

I mean, it's literally broken.

Here are some frequently asked questions about what users and businesses might expect from the changes. But as the fallout in Slovakia and Cambodia illustrated, any changes to Facebook's algorithms are likely to have unintended consequences.

"In an odd way we will look back and think this was a pretty good thing for the news industry", he said.

Stories and videos from the pages you choose will appear first in your News Feed on all your devices.

The social network is now testing a feature that separates user and news publishers posts in an effort to streamline the News Feed. The company's plan is to refocus users' feeds around posts from friends and family members, not posts from brands, businesses, and publishers, even if it comes at the expense of people spending less time on Facebook. But when Facebook is used to deepen friendships that have already been struck and to forge new relationships, the social network helps people feel less alone.

Now it is determined to turn over a new leaf.

Make sure your preferences are switched to "On" for Notifications. In extraordinary times, it was a surprising admission.

That's because Facebook is being "far more explicit" in its wording about what sorts of posts will diminish. Back when Facebook felt like a fun way to pass a few minutes in line at the grocery store, rather than the fulcrum of American democracy.

Zuckerberg has made his new year's resolution a tradition: learning Mandarin, eating only meat he's killed himself, reading a book a week, touring the country to talk to regular people. In many ways the company is seeking to play a greater role in public affairs than ever before.

That new position is going to be a nightmare for a lot of digital media companies that have grown to rely on Facebook's News Feed to drive readers to their sites.

Evan Niu, CFA owns shares of Facebook. The company will face continued pressure to address misinformation across all of its platforms. It may well make them worse. He foresees a "Facebook Apocalypse" for business and publishers on Facebook.

And how does one weed out the numerous public figures who are using Facebook for PR without creating marketing-focused "pages"?
