Ryan Giggs 'proud' to take over as Wales manager

Ryan Giggs 'proud' to take over as Wales manager

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has been appointed as the new Wales manager.

Giggs won 64 caps between 1991 and 2007 and captained his country - but he was criticised for regularly pulling out of squads and especially for missing friendly matches.

It's the last game of the season, we want to end on a high.

"I'd like to think I'll be the same kind of manager as I was a player", Giggs said, "with professionalism but also a little bit of fun along the way".

"The beauty of football is that everyone has an opinion and you have to take that".

Ryan Giggs says he is ready to deal with critics after taking the Wales hotseat on Monday afternoon.

Similarly, managing United after Van Gaal could have been too big a task for relative rookie, regardless of his in-depth knowledge of the club and the players required to succeed at Old Trafford.

Giggs, who revealed he has sought the advice of former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, has highlighted qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as his ultimate target. There has to be a flexibility because every situation will be different. "That desire to get there still burns and I want to do it as a manager".

Ryan Giggs could be set for a sensational reunion with Paul Scholes.

Giggs' first game in charge will be in the China Cup tournament against the hosts in Nanning on 22 March.

Giggs spent nearly his entire club career at United playing under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He then spent two years on the coaching staff at United before Jose Mourinho's arrival as manager forced his exit, which took a psychological toll on the former winger.

That separation from United was hard, Giggs acknowledged in May, including seeing a psychologist to help him cope with that separation.

Giggs has steadfastly refused to even contemplate the idea of dropping down a division or two to manage either, because he feels his top-level experience as a player with the Red Devils means he's primed for top-level management and top-level management only.

"I had a great [coaching] apprenticeship at United, but now I am ready to go on my own with Wales".
