Nadal Too good For Mayer In Melbourne

Nadal Too good For Mayer In Melbourne

"That's all I'm really focusing on", he said about his drive to break his Grand Slam duck.

Nick Kyrgios's new-found calm remained intact despite a night of freakish distractions as the fiery home favourite outplayed Serbia's Viktor Troicki to reach the Australian Open third round without conceding a set on Wednesday.

In the last 32, Nadal will face 28th seed Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia, who defeated Australian John Millman 7-5 3-6 6-4 6-1.

Former victor Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fought to the bitter end to overhaul rising Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov in a five-set thriller.

"I'm happy to be in the third round".

Asked about his knee injury that troubled the build-up to his tournament, Nadal said: "I don't know, I hope (it will be OK)!"

But Mayer would not go down without a fight.

Nick Kyrgios of Australia plays a forehand in his second round match against Viktor Troicki of Serbia on day three of the 2018 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 17, 2018 in Melbourne, Australia. And 38-year-old Ivo Karlovic overcame Yuichi Sugita 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 7-5, 4-6, 12-10. Nadal had looked to take the set on the Argentine's serve but some timely hitting from Mayer saved four set points, including three from 0-40 down, to hold for 5-3.

Karlovic wound up with just 10 double faults Wednesday, four fewer than Sugita, who had 16 aces. She clinched a 75-minute third set on her first match point when Fett netted a backhand.

The Australian Open junior champion previous year, who entered the season-opening major ranked No. 521, Kostyuk became the youngest player since Martina Hingis in 1996 to win main draw matches at the season-opening major. The fifth set stayed on serve until Karlovic broke for an 11-10 lead before closing out the win in the next game.

Sixth seed Marin Cilic and French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko are also in action.

American Ryan Harrison pulled off a minor upset when he beat 31st-seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The set eventually went to a tie break, where Nadal saw out the match 7-4 with a thunderous serve. Harrison, 25, has matched his best Grand Slam performance, when he reached the third round of the U.S. Open past year.

Elsewhere in second-round matches, 10th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta was ahead of Gilles Simon 6-2, 3-0 when the Frenchman retired due to a leg injury.

Mayer, for the record, beat Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 to book today's date with Nadal.

Things will get harder for her now, against fellow Ukrainian and No. 4-seeded Elina Svitolina, who had a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Katerina Siniakova.
