Sports court to start Russian Olympic doping appeals Monday

Sports court to start Russian Olympic doping appeals Monday

Russian sportswear company Zasport published on Thursday sketches of what it says are IOC-approved designs for the competitors, who will be officially known as Olympic Athletes from Russia.

Although Russia has been banned from the Olympics, those athletes who have never failed a drug test can compete in South Korea under strict conditions.

Last month, ZASPORT head Anastasia Zadorina said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the new design of athletes' uniforms since the initially designed outfit had to undergo changes due to the Russian team's change of status from national to neutral.

But other athletes are still hopeful of taking part in next month's Olympics in Pyeongchang, with a final decision on each case "likely" to come between January 29th and February 2nd - only a week before the start of the Games.

The federation said it had suggested that the anti-doping agency RUSADA pay closer attention to regional and junior competitions as it has found that "certain problems with doping are present in this segment of Russian track and field".

The cases involving three biathletes have been suspended and will be heard at a later date.

Only Russian athletes with a clean history will be able to compete in Pyeongchang, under the Olympic flag and as an "Olympic Athlete from Russia".

The IOC last month banned Russian Federation from the February 9-25 Pyeongchang Games as a result of its "unprecedented systematic manipulation" of the anti-doping system, though individual athletes will be able to compete effectively as neutrals if they can prove their anti-doping credentials.

All but one of the 43 Russians who were banned by the International Olympic Committee disciplinary commission following doping violations at the last Winter Olympics, in Sochi 2014, appealed to the CAS and 39 cases will be heard next week in Geneva.

Sochi 2014 gold medallists Alexander Legkov (cross-country skiing), Aleksei Negodailo (bobsleigh), Aleksandr Tretiakov (skeleton), Dmitry Trunenkov (bobsleigh) and Aleksandr Zubkov (bobsleigh) are among the 42 athletes to have appealed against their bans. The team was also banned from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero.
