U.S. couple arrested after police discover 13 children held captive in home

U.S. couple arrested after police discover 13 children held captive in home

They were booked for violations of California Penal Code Section 206-Torture and Section 273a (A)-Child Endangerment.

A house of horrors was discovered Tuesday in California when one of 13 children held captive escaped and alerted police. The girl used a cell phone to call 911 to report that her 12 siblings were still locked in the home.

Police initially thought the 17-year-old girl was about 10-years-old.

Their parents are arrested and accused of torturing and endangering the lives and health of children, police said, quoted by world agencies. The sheriff's department said deputies were shocked to learn that seven of the victims were adults between the ages of 18 and 29.

It was originally believes that all 13 were children due to their malnourishment, but it was later revealed that the siblings were ages between two and 29 years of age. The teenager claimed her 12 brothers and sisters were being held captive inside the residence by her parents and further claimed some of her siblings were bound with chains and padlocks.

Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services are involved in the investigation.

Mary Parks, senior public information officer for Riverside County Social Services, told ABC News today that the main priority is for the minors to be taken care of by the hospital.

The Turpins were sent to jail on a $9 million bail each.

After the daughter who raised the alarm was interviewed by police, the other 11 children of the Turpin family were found when officers entered the home on Sunday night.

They said they had not spoken to their grandchildren, saying David Turpin or his wife would often call when they were without the children, who are homeschooled. They are scheduled for a Thursday court date.
