Virat Kohli named ICC cricketer of the year 2017

Virat Kohli named ICC cricketer of the year 2017

Australia captain Steve Smith finished second to Kohli for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, but went on to win his maiden ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award. The record of the star cricketer was great, as evidenced by the parameters through which the recipient of the award is selected, that is looking at his performance between, September 21, 2016 to December 31, 2017, Virat scored 2,203 Test runs at an average of 77.80.

The top order batsman was also adjudged the ODI player of the year. This award is named against the legendary umpire David Shepherd. Erasmus joined ICC's Elite Panel in 2010 and has officiated in 47 Tests and 74 ODIs, including the Champions Trophy final, and 26 T20Is.

Pakistan winning the Champions Trophy last year was picked as the Fans' moment of the year by ICC. He has taken the burden of Afghanistan's hope on his shoulders at such a young age of 19. Afghanistan will make their Test debut this year and he would want to excel at the global level as well. He has 60 wickets to his name for his country in 2017.

In the Bangalore test match, Yuzvendra Chahal's 6 for 25 against England received massive limelight in the last year has been identified and recognized by ICC as the T20I Performance of the Year. The leg-spinner has cemented his place in the limited overs Indian side. Though the coup de grace was his performance in the Ashes, scoring runs with such frequency that comparisons with Don Bradman was made with every passing innings, he has been in sublime form for at least four years, scoring over 1000 Test runs in each of them. Ever since then, he has featured in nearly all the ODIs and T20Is for his country.

While the batsmen were yet again the dominant force in world cricket, the bowlers had their say as well. He averages 65.29 when his team are batting second and 93.64 when his team successfully chases down a target. He was also one of the leading scorers in Tests, accumulating 1059 runs from 10 matches including five hundreds.

After back to back test debacles, there is finally something to cheer for Indian skipper Virat Kohli as he has been named the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2017 on Thursday.

Gavaskar, one of the ICC Cricket Hall of Famers, had achieved the milestone in his 50th Test when he scored 13 and 221 at The Oval in 1979 to jump from 887 points to 916 points, which remained his career-best. Quinton de Kock had won it in 2016, while prior to that, the accolade had come AB de Villiers' way, twice, in 2014 and 2015.

"Congratulations to Virat Kohli on becoming the ODI cricketer of the year and the ICC cricketer of the year". The inclusion of Steve Smith was a no-brainer in this side as Mitchell Starc was the only other Australian in the line-up.

Ashwin also congratulated Cheteshwar Pujara, tweeting "Congrats on making it to the ICC Test team of the year Cheteshwar Pujara, 1000 runs in a season is no mean achievement".
