Amazon rules out Portland for second headquarters

Amazon rules out Portland for second headquarters

None appeared on the list of 20 metropolitan areas that will move onto the next phase of the selection process. We are disappointed but as always proud of the great collaborative work our community did to put together the bid.

The e-commerce retailer said its second corporate headquarters would create 50,000 jobs with an average salary of $100,000, and develop 8 million square feet of office space and invest $5 billion over 15-17 years. Miami was named one of those picked to move on to the next phase, joining cities that include Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and NY among others.

Amazon on Thursday announced 20 finalists for the new headquarters and none of the three bids from Missouri made the cut.

The University of Miami, along with Miami-Dade College and Florida International University, worked with the city's Beacon Council - Miami-Dade County's official economic development partnership - to submit a proposal to Amazon Oct. 18.

Amazon has said its preferences for the site include a metropolitan location with a population of more than 1 million, mass transit, proximity to an worldwide flight hub and the potential to retain and attract technical talent.
