Beer will stay warm in IN grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations

Only one member of the Senate Public Policy Committee voted yes on Wednesday, while nine members voted no on a bill that would have expanded cold beer sales.

IN is the only state that regulates the temperature at which beer is sold.

Under current law, grocery, drug and convenience stores aren't allowed to sell cold beer but liquor stores are. He says the state should take time to review those effects before authorizing a full 20-hour sales day.

But today's vote sent a strong message that cold beer is different and lawmakers want to continue to see it sold exclusively at package liquor stores. The bill was not expected to be passed out of the Indiana General Assembly.

"The Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers applaud the Senate Public Policy Committee for rightly rejecting the misguided expansion of the sale of cold beer for carry-out". He said he wanted to open dialogue about a singular issue that had not been debated in the Senate.

In exchange for the monopoly on cold beer sales, package liquor stores pay more for their liquor licenses, and could therefore pay a high price for any change in policy.

"Should the state allow cold beer to be sold in convenience stores and gas stations, we would be forced to carry to be competitive", Singh said.

Matt Norris, on behalf of the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, said the request was simple. The changes would also apply to police officers.

"Multiple studies have proven that the single greatest predictor of violent crimes in neighborhoods is the alcohol outlet density", Summers said.

The Sunday sales bill would allow beer, wine, and liquor to be sold between noon and 8:00 p.m. on the Sabbath.

Some Indiana lawmakers turned a cold shoulder to the idea of expanding cold beer sales. Fifty-eight percent supported the legalization of Sunday sales. "I think it's important to be sensitive to that, represent those folks and limit the hours of Sunday sales", said Rep.

But Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette), the bill's author, says alcohol isn't like other products.

Not everyone agrees. Several people spoke out against the bill in front of the committee Wednesday, including Jay Singh. It is awaiting a final vote in the Senate before going across the hall to the House, where a committee has passed a House version of the legislation.
