Hamas Claims Suspect in Killing of Rabbi as Member

Speaking to reporters outside the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa after visiting the two Border Police officers injured in the operation, Liberman again thanked the security forces behind the raid in the northern West Bank city, saying "it was not a one-time event, but a continuous effort".

Jarrar is believed to be behind the attack that killed Rabbi Raziel Shevach of Gilad Farm, who was shot as he drove his auto near the northern West Bank outpost earlier this month.

A Palestinian family in the Gaza Strip said it has killed a relative who allegedly helped Israel track down and kill three senior Hamas militants, including one of the man's own kinsmen.

The Israeli army said in a statement on Twitter that Jarrar had used a "self-manufactured weapon".

Palestinian witnesses said they saw at least two Palestinians arrested, with clashes continuing into Thursday morning.

The Israeli troops shot one Palestinian gunman dead and detained another.

The West Bank, captured by Israel in 1967 and sought by the Palestinians for a future state, is dotted with dozens of Israeli-government sanctioned settlements as well as unauthorized settler outposts that Israeli authorities have allowed to thrive.

Tensions in the region have increased in recent weeks after US President Donald Trump's controversial decision to name Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

In a Facebook statement, Hamas spokesman Abdel Latif al-Qanou said the overnight operation in Jenin "could not have happened without information sharing and damned security coordination".

A Special Forces police unit on Wednesday night carried out a mission to capture the terrorists who murdered Rabbi Raziel Shevach earlier this month.

After the attack, Israel's military set up roadblocks, cordoned off Palestinian villages and deployed reinforcements to the area searching for suspects.
