Amazon increases its monthly Prime membership rate to $12.99

Amazon increases its monthly Prime membership rate to $12.99

The online shopping giant Amazon has hiked the cost of monthly Prime memberships in the USA from $2 to $12.99 in order to attract more people towards an annual plan. The cost for students will now be $6.49, an uptick of $1.

Amazon doesn't disclose how many Prime members it has, but it has had success with the program because Prime members tend to buy more things on the site, more often, because shipping is quick and low-cost.

In June, Amazon announced a new discounted rate of $5.99 per month for anyone who receives government assistance.

The new prices are now live on the Amazon Prime subscription page. The annual $99 option is seeing no changes, but it may just be a matter of time before that goes up, too, as Amazon continues to introduce more and more benefits. In 2016, though, the monthly option was added for users who didn't want to commit to an entire year. The prime membership is being offered in 16 countries so far, with around 90 million customers in the U.S. (not confirmed). This was seen as an attempt to compete with Netflix and other streaming services.
