Amazon Reveals 20 Finalists for 2nd headquarters

Amazon Reveals 20 Finalists for 2nd headquarters

Amazon Inc. rejected several CT proposals for its second headquarters, announcing Thursday the selection of 20 jurisdictions as finalists in the online retailer's closely-watched competition.

The new facility is expected to employ 50,000 people and spend about $5 billion in the area where it builds the second headquarters.

Amazon said it received bids from 238 cities and regions across the country.

Amazon says it expects to make a final decision about which gets the nod sometime in 2018, so by the end of this year.

The list reveals little in terms of geographic preferences, with finalists on both coasts and the heartland. Amazon found it hard to engage with so many applicants and had to whittle the list to enter the next phase of evaluation. "Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity", Holly Sullivan, Amazon Public Policy, said in a press release. "Through this process we learned about many new communities across North America that we will consider as locations for future infrastructure investment and job creation". Some people have noted that the Washington/Raleigh/Montgomery County cluster might indicate Amazon has a strong interest in ending up somewhere with close proximity to the seat of US government - but that doesn't mean D.C.is necessarily a shoe-in: Some of the other cities will probably do much better in the evening wear portion of the competition. High paying tech jobs can permanently transform a region and raise the political prospects of the leader who helped seal the deal. In the coming months, Amazon will work with each of the candidate locations to dive deeper into their proposals, request additional information, and evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership that can accommodate the company's hiring plans as well as benefit its employees and the local community. Miami was named one of those picked to move on to the next phase, joining cities that include Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and NY among others.
