China: Tencent and Google to Share Patents of Products, Technologies

Google and Tencent are to cross-license patents across a wide array of products and technologies in a new deal announced today (19 January).

The exact terms of the agreement has not been disclosed but Google has said that it is a long term partnership focused on different range of products and technologies.

Two of the world's biggest tech companies have reached a deal to collaborate more closely.

There is also scope for future collaboration, with an understanding the companies will develop future technologies together.

Tencent are the company behind WeChat, China's largest social media platform, and their largest payment service (WeChat Pay) with over 650 million monthly active user accounts and thus have a lot of Chinese patents that would interest many companies - especially Google. The agreement will allow Google to expand into China and Tencent to branch out from China globally.

Quite a number of Google services are blocked in China at the moment and Google itself pulled its search engine from the country in 2010 after defying China's self-censorship rules.

Update (1/16/18): Yesterday, we brought you the surprising news that Google was returning to China.

In addition, Google unveiled a major investment in Chinese livestream gaming app Chushou this month, which is similar to Google's own YouTube game livestreaming services.

Now that the door is ajar Google are slowly trying to make inroads into the world's largest market, the Chinese market. Google is now trying to get back into China by combining with various different Chinese companies in the mainland.

"The agreement may smooth the USA company's business in China while helping Tencent's push to expand beyond its dominant position on the mainland", Bloomberg said. The Chinese firm made numerous deals past year, including investments in Snap and Tesla.
