English Premier League Report: Arsenal v Crystal Palace 20 January 2018

English Premier League Report: Arsenal v Crystal Palace 20 January 2018

Wenger's side head into Saturday's clash with Crystal Palace in crisis with their star forward Alexis Sanchez preparing to join Manchester United.

However, the north London side did not appear to struggle up front during the game. "Once things are clear, the team responds and focusses on the job", Wenger said at a news conference after the victory over Palace.

Nacho Monreal got the opening goal for the Gunners barely six minutes into the game before Iwobi ended his long goals' drought to double Arsenal's lead in the 10th minute. Now watching their top-four aspirations slip rapidly away, the Gunners need to start mounting wins fast if they're going to stay in the hunt for a Champions League spot.

Palace were at least able to survive a further nine minutes unbreached before Mesut Ozil played a one-two with Jack Wilshere and then supplied a sublime back-heel from which Alexandre Lacazette finished low and right-footed past Hennessey, under siege in the Palace goal.

Wenger joked that while he had been tempted to select Sanchez, the logistics of transfers made his inclusion more hard. The deal would see Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to the Gunners, which made talks more complicated and was slowing them down, Wenger said.

"I didn't take him because there is this question of him moving to Manchester United, you can not drive up north and as well play football", he said. Theo Walcott has also completed his move to Everton.

Jose Mourinho had already confirmed Mkhitaryan would miss the game in his pre-match press conference, but Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger elected to wait until Saturday to omit Sanchez from his squad. His team gave the flawless response to the testing period though as they raced into a four-goal lead to wrap up the match inside 22 minutes.
