India test-fires nuclear-capable ICBM Agni-V

The successful test-firing of nuclear-capable Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-5 on Thursday has not gone unnoticed in Beijing, with security experts warning that most of China's northernmost parts are now within striking distance.

In a tweet, Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the missile launch marks a "major boost to the defense capabilities of our country".

On Thursday, in its first pre-induction trial conducted by the SFC, the 17-metre Agni-V was launched from a canister atop the road-mobile launcher from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha.

The Agni-V rocket weighs more than 50 tonnes and is built to carry a nuclear warhead weighting 1.5 tonnes.

"The missile's flight performance was tracked and monitored by radars, range stations and tracking systems all through the mission".

"All mission objectives were successfully met". "(This) was simply a developmental test before India inducts it into operational range", Narang said.

The Press Trust of India said quoting an official from the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), which is responsible for developing Indian missiles that the surface-to-surface Agni-5 was sacked from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Abdul Kalam Island at around 9.30 AM. "With a range of "easily more than 5,500 km" [3,400 miles], the Agni-V clearly confers upon India the ability to hold all of China's Eastern Seaboard cities at risk from Peninsular India", the journal said.

For decades, New Delhi has been honing its space launch and ballistic missile capability.

They would join an exclusive nuclear club only now including America, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France.
