Root helps England take 2-0 series lead over Aussies

Root helps England take 2-0 series lead over Aussies

After defeat in Ashes England had turned in an impressive all-round team performance to beat Australia by four wickets in the second one-day global at the Gabba on Friday.

Chasing the target, Jonny Bairstow contributed 60 runs for England while Alex Hales scored 57.

Starc breathed life into the contest by capturing the wickets of Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali but ran out of overs.

Australia are looking to level the five-match ODI series after losing the opener by five wickets in Melbourne. The first ODI was won by England at the MCG.

Root had earlier chipped in with two for 31 as Eoin Morgan's inspired decision to use his occasional off-breaks for seven overs struck gold.

They were out in quick succession with Hales playing a lazy shot to chop a quick delivery from impressive debutant Jhye Richardson onto his stumps, while Bairstow was caught needlessly trying to loft over the in-field.

In leading England out for the 70th time, Eoin Morgan overtook Alastair Cook as the country's most experienced one-day captain.

They managed only 67 runs in the last 10 overs and captain Steve Smith was forced to admit: "Everything fell to pieces again and 270 isn't good enough against a quality batting line-up like England". Root accumulated runs in his customary fashion, while Buttler hit an entertaining 42 before he edged Starc behind to Carey.

Prior to the Ashes series the selectors were blunt when it came to why they plucked Tim Paine from the cricketing wilderness to keep for Australia. Hardly the most exhaustive of chases.

They played Adam Zampa in the first game, but dropped him at the Gabba and went without a specialist spinner which didn't make too much sense considering the fact that it was a two-paced wicket Zampa would have made a real impact there.

Smith chose to bat first and "run them off their feet" on a hot Queensland afternoon but, aside from Finch's 114-ball hundred, Australia singularly under-delivered.

It all reflected how Australia are lacking conviction as a one-day side. A four-wicket win with 34 balls remaining has given them a 2-0 lead in the series.

The other batsmen seemed unsure how to approach their innings, with increasing desperation resulting in diminishing returns as Head and White wafted away but rarely connected. The pair conceded 72 from 10 wicketless overs.

"But the guys that are there to come in and potentially take their spot if they need are in great form if they need".

Yet, there is one notable member of their four-man bowling unit who will not be on duty: spinner Nathan Lyon. Root duly pinned Smith lbw, the high point of a spell which also accounted for Travis Head. We just couldn't get that power going in the back end.

"It was far from our best performance with the bat. We had to stay cool in the moment and get the job done".

Australia cleaned the floor with England in the Ashes Test series but now, it's all about the One Day International series.

"As a side we're playing great cricket". We'll have those times here, closer to the match.
