Australian Open: Hyeon Chung Knocks Out Alexander Zverev In Five Sets

Roger Federer has lifted the lid on the locker-room advice he offered Alexander Zverev following the German's shock defeat to Hyeon Chung at the Australian Open.

The last set lasted for an incredible two hours, 20 minutes, with Halep saving three match points in the 22nd game to hold for 11-11.

"It was a really tough match, I was just trying to play 100 per cent out there", Chung, who will next meet Novak Djokovic or Albert Ramos-Vinolas, said in his post-match interview on court. "It happened here. But I'm still young, so I've got time".

Alexander Zverev of Germany waves as he leaves after losing against Chung Hyeon of South Korea.

After both players shared the opening four sets in what was a highly competitive match where baseline exchanges dominated the fifth and final set began with Zverev dropping serve with a double fault.

"I don't think I played bad".

"I have some figuring out to do, what happens to me in deciding moments in Grand Slams", Zverev said.

"It was really tough, he is a really good player and we know how to play each other", said the glasses-wearing 21-year-old, who trained in the heat of Thailand before coming to Melbourne.

"After a match like today. he's still very young, still up-and-coming to some extent".

The final set took 2 hour, 22 minutes and Halep won on her first match point when Davis hit a forehand wide along the sideline.

"If I play Novak again, I'm just happy to share the court with Novak".

American Tennys Sandgren, who defeated 2014 victor Stan Wawrinka in the second round, continued to make progress, putting out German Maximilian Marterer 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). In the one with Nadal, I wasn't.

Zverev reached the fourth round at Wimbledon a year ago but has never gone further than the third round at the Australian Open and French Open, and he has failed to go beyond the second round at the US Open. The Swiss is now 18-2 against Gasquet, winning the last 9.

Federer booked his own place in the fourth round with a straight-sets win against Richard Gasquet, setting up a clash with Marton Fucsovics.

Madison Keys is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open after starting Saturday's program on Margaret Court Arena with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ana Bogdan.

And the bottom half of the draw lost another seed when Tomas Berdych strolled past Del Potro in a surprisingly comfortable win.
