Feds Intend To Re-Try Senator Bob Menendez

Feds Intend To Re-Try Senator Bob Menendez

Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and Salomon Melgen, after a federal judge declared a mistrial in the bribery and fraud case.

The Justice Department plans to put Sen.

Menendez is up for re-election in November.

In a report broken by Politico, federal prosecutors announced that they will retry U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, after a deadlocked jury in November resulted in a mistrial.

Menendez took trips on the doctor's private jet, vacations in Paris and the Dominican Republic and $750,000 in campaign contributions, the government said in the court proceedings.

Federal authorities announced on January 19 that they will seek to retry U.S. Senator Robert Menendez on corruption charges, Politico wrote. Both Menendez and co-defendant Salomon Melgen are Hispanic.

"The conduct alleged in the indictment is serious and warrants retrial before a jury of citizens in the District of New Jersey", the statement said".

After more than a week of deliberations, jurors sent a note to U.S. District Judge William Walls notifying him that they were unable to reach a unanimous decision. "Senator Menendez fully intends to be vindicated-again".

Menendez is also charged with making false statements on his senate financial disclosure forms. The first trial already had damaged his standing in his home state.

Several jurors interviewed after the first trial said as many as 10 members of the panel were in favor of acquittal.

Prosecutors say the senator helped obtain visas for Melgen's foreign girlfriends, pressured federal officials to resolve a multimillion-dollar Medicare billing dispute in Melgen's favor, and pushed an assistant secretary of state to advance Melgen's interests in a port-security contract dispute with the Dominican Republic.

Outside the courthouse after the mistrial, an emotional Menendez made clear that he would be out for political vengeance.

Kirk Ogrosky, an attorney for Melgen, said they are "disappointed that this Justice Department would re-try the case".

"I think that they will be carefully reviewing what they thought happened, and trimming and cutting where they think it makes sense to", Petalas said.
