Government shutdown grounds sports at Air Force Academy

Government shutdown grounds sports at Air Force Academy

Air Force's athletic events were put in jeopardy at that time as well, but sponsor USAA provided $230,000 for the Falcons' football team to play at Navy, according to The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

But due to the government shutting down, all Air Force Academy intercollegiate athletic events are cancelled until further notice, per a release.

The shutdown began at midnight ET when U.S. Senators could not reach a resolution to continue funding the federal government.

On Saturday the Air Force men's basketball team was scheduled to face Fresno State, while the hockey team was slated to finish their weekend series with Sacred Heart. Air Force will work to reschedule as many missed events as possible once the shutdown is over.

The government shutdown has also forced a blackout to the American Forces Network, which broadcasts American radio and television programming in Europe and other locations outside of the nation.

Navy's sporting events, meanwhile, "will go on as scheduled, such as a men's basketball game against Boston University on Saturday", the Baltimore Sun reported.

The notice of the blackout sparked angry reactions from viewers, with several noting the timing could not be worse.

One alternative already announced by the NFL was at USO Center's overseas, as the NFL is offering the games via NFL Game Pass for free.
