Jos Buttler inspires England to ODI series win over Australia

Jos Buttler inspires England to ODI series win over Australia

Here, we look at the good and the bad of the most competitive match of the series so far.

The Aussie bowlers conceded 13 wides which gifted England two extra overs and meant the innings over-ran by nearly half an hour - costing beleaguered skipper Smith part of his match fee.

Buttler however showed the depth England have in their batting line-up in limited-overs cricket as he and Woakes continued to attack even though they only had four wickets remaining. He hit three sixes in the final five overs.

Before play, England batsman Joe Root was presented with his 100th ODI cap from fellow Yorkshireman Sam Burgess, a rugby league player for England and South Sydney.

With the series now wrapped up 3-0, it seems unlikely the 32-year-old will return for the visitors in the next week.

Jason Roy (19) miscued a lofted drive off Cummins to extra cover and Alex Hales made just one before he mistimed Stoinis to mid-on as England scored 47-2 off the first 10 overs. Cameron White, a hard-hitting veteran promoted up the order to counterattack, landed a few hefty blows but fell for an unconvincing 17 as Australia slumped to 44 for 2 in the ninth over. On a pitch that challenged their dynamic batsmen, a score of 302 for six was posted and defended to seal victory by 16 runs and a 3-0 series lead.

Seeing Wood bowl with such pace and accuracy makes one wonder if England missed a trick by not picking him for any of the Ashes Tests. "On a two-paced wicket, he paced it to perfection, played the anchor until about five or six overs out", England captain Eoin Morgan said.

"I don't know what it is, but not many balls were hitting the middle of my bat which was disappointing ..."

However, the narrative hasn't changed.

"At no stage did Australia bring the run rate down quite considerably which would have meant bringing one of our better bowlers on earlier than intended".

That is when it started to go all horribly wrong for the hosts.

England were severely hampered by the loss of burly paceman Liam Plunkett who pulled his left hamstring as he ran into bowl his eighth ball of the innings.

The partnership was broken in controversial fashion as Wood found Smith's edge which went low to Buttler, who claimed the catch, and after much deliberation the third umpire said that it was out much to the anger of Smith, who thought the ball hit the ground.

Morgan praised the England bowlers and hoped that they will be able to continue in the same vein over the rest of the series.

Perhaps there should have been no surprise at Woakes' ability to match Buttler at the crease.
