Samsung starts mass production of 'industry's first' 16Gb GDDR6 memory

Samsung has announced that it has started the mass production of industry's first 16GB GDDR6 (Graphics Double Data Rate 6) GPU memory.

It's not been revealed when Samsung will be releasing this chip to the wider market, but it did announce the new memory will be making its presense felt in the premium memory market within next several years.

Aimed at providing gaming devices, graphics cards and automotive, network and artificial intelligence systems (that's everything, then) with advanced graphics processing, the new graphics chip is built on Samsung's 10nm class process tech. "We are going to grab upper hands in markets for games and graphic cards by releasing next-generation GDDR6 graphic DRAM earlier than everyone else and we are also planning to actively respond to increased demands from automotive markets and network markets".

The chips Samsung are working now are 16 Gb GDDR6 chips, made using Samsung's 10 nm class process.

"With all of its improvements in density, performance and energy efficiency, the 16GB GDDR6 will be widely used in rapidly growing fields such as 8K Ultra HD video processing, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence", the firm added. It comes in a 16Gb density, double that of its 20nm 8Gb GDDR5 memory, which runs at 1.55V and is found in modern graphics cards. We should also mention the 18-gigabits-per-second (Gbps) pin speed and data transfers of 72 gigabytes per second (Gbps). Memory Bandwidth will also see a considerable bump on next-generation GPUs using GDDR6 VRAM, allowing maximum bandwidth output of around 864 GB/s on 384-bit card and a 576 GB/s on a 256-bit card.

These chips, which are aimed at supercomputers and advanced graphics systems, feature a 2.4 Gbps pin speed at 1.2V, nearly double the speed of the first generation HBM2.

In any event, Samsung's GDDR6 offers a 35 percent energy reduction compared to GDDR5, along with a 30 percent manufacturing productivity gain. At the moment, Samsung's current 8Gb (1GB) GDDR5 memory chips work at 1.55V with up to 9Gb/s pin speeds.
