Apple to Cancel iPhone X Model Due to Disappointing Sales

Apple to Cancel iPhone X Model Due to Disappointing Sales

The iPhone maker has also reduced orders at suppliers because of the weak demand. But what should we expect from 2018's models? The sales are said to be particularly sluggish in China, where bigger-screened smartphones are more popular.

Apparently, Chinese customers are disappointed by the amount of usable space on the phone's display. KGI notes that a large number of Chinese users are now adhering to their existing phones for a long time, and specifically the notch on the top of the iPhone X's Super Retina display has turned away some potential customers in the region.

Comparisons to the 2016 cycle are hard due to the staggered debut of the (higher priced) iPhone X in November, but it seems like older iPhone models sold better than usual during the holiday season.

Offering iPhone X at a lower price point could be "negative to product brand value", in Kuo's view. The company may keep them around for a couple of years because a large section of its users still prefer the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Kuo suggested that lowering the price of the original iPhone X after Apple launches its new models in 2018 "would be a negative to product brand value given 3D sensing and OLED display are features of the new high-price model". 47,900) and feature a 6.1-inch display.

Ming-Chi Kuo predicts the iPhone shipments would grow 5% in the first half of this year. It would be the first time for Apple to not have a flagship iPhone as the cheaper option when the newer version arrives.

The company believes that the tech giant will have a disappointing 2018 in terms of iPhone sales. Going back almost a decade, Apple has always positioned older iPhone models around as a wallet-friendly alternative for users who weren't keen on paying a premium for Apple's flagship. Harrison said his firm is "seeing only a good, not great iPhone cycle". The number, however, is much lower than the earlier projection that ranged somewhere between 20 to 30 million units.

That's right: Apple is due to kill off its most expensive iPhone after the summer, right when the next generation of iPhones is due and less than a year after its debut (it didn't go on sale until November 3).
