Trump mired at historically low approval level despite voters' economic optimism

Gallup's annual survey of global opinion toward the leadership of selected nations (the U.S., China, Russia, and Germany) showed a big slide in approval ratings for the U.S. since Trump took office. For results based on the total samples, the margin of sampling error ranges from ±2.0 percentage points to ±5.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

But the White House continues to point to another set of data- the record-breaking numbers on the stock market since Donald Trump's election.

U.S. leadership approval ratings declined almost as much in Europe to 25 percent as they did in the Americas. The same percentage of disapproving Democrats say reducing federal regulations on business is good for the country.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll published early Sunday found that 36 percent of respondents approve of the job Trump is doing as commander in chief.

A total of 46 percent of respondents think the federal crackdown on undocumented immigrants is a good thing for the country, while 47 percent think in the opposite way.

The pollsters also asked voters which words best described how they felt about Trump. Only 29 percent approve of what he has done so far which is a far cry from the 44 percent of men polled. The biggest regional drop came in the Americas, where the image of US leadership sank from a 49 percent approval rate in 2016 to 24 percent past year. Just over a quarter, 26 percent, say they believe there is solid evidence to buttress this latter assessment.

Despite unproven allegations of collusion with Russian Federation during his presidential campaign, Trump's policies towards Moscow have changed little from that of his predecessor, as he has presided over the signing of new sanctions package on Russian Federation and the continued North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military buildup in Eastern Europe. And approval of Robert Mueller's handling of the investigation has ebbed, from 58 to 50 percent in 11 weeks.

And disapproval of USA leadership climbed.

The US approval rating suffered most in its own neighborhood, the Americas, where the ratings dropped to a new low.

Amid worries about the president's mind, lawmakers invited Yale School of Medicine psychiatrist Dr. Brandy Lee to Washington for briefings about Trump's mental state in December.

The survey is, of course, not the first to find America's standing in the world slipping around the world under Trump's leadership.

Some 900 people surveyed over the phone noted the state of the economy, low unemployment, the tax legislation and the fight against the terrorist group Islamic State as positive results of the incumbent administration, although 37 percent thought otherwise. He was especially strong in the suburbs and in greater Minnesota, which could mean help for Republicans like U.S. Rep. Jason Lewis and GOP state lawmakers in the suburbs where Trump's support remains strong. The gulf between Republicans on one side and Democrats and independents on the other underscores why this part of border security has been a sticking point in budget negotiations between the two parties. Trump rescinded the Obama program last fall and asked Congress to come up with a solution by March.

That's not to say everyone in the White House isn't polling well in the U.S.
