Apple to release an entry-level 13 inch MacBook later this year

Apple to release an entry-level 13 inch MacBook later this year

Apple has stubbornly refused to update the MacBook Air in any meaningful way for the last three years, leaving us with an "entry-level" $999 laptop with a woefully outdated screen and body design.

The sources aren't saying if this is a new addition to Apple's lineup, or if it's replacing a model that's now available.

With new orders for MacBooks and other models, GIS is expected to ramp up its LCM shipments to 600,000 units a month by the end of 2018 compared to 300,000 units now, said the sources. The 512GB model is also $200 off if you require even more storage. Apple refreshed the components inside the MacBook Air in 2017 - such as the processors - but hasn't updated other features - like the display - in years.

There's not a lot more information from the report to go on, but with Apple looking to use OLED displays in future MacBooks, this new order of LCD displays could be used for a cheaper entry-level MacBook.

It remains unclear what this new 13-inch MacBook will look like but it's likely that Apple will make an effort to distinguish it from the existing 13-inch Pro models. Apple's long-term aim was to replace the MacBook Air with the 12-inch MacBook but sales of the Air have remained strong thanks to its affordability.

The MacBook Air is the only notebook that the company still sells that does not have a retina display.

Now, no-one's going to mistake the Chromebook Spin 11 for a MacBook.

Shipments of the iPhone X from Apple's production partner Foxconn Electronics are now projected to reach 18 million and 13 million units in the first and second quarter of 2018, compared to 20-30 million and 15-20 million units forecast previously, said the sources.
