Google brings audiobooks on Play Store without subscription fee

Google brings audiobooks on Play Store without subscription fee

Unlike some of Google's competition, Play Books won't use a subscription for listening.

The company is marketing the new service with a sale on popular audiobook titles including "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" by J.K. Rowling, Fire & Fury by Michaelk Wolff and "1984" by George Orwell. On Google Play, you can buy a single audiobook at an affordable price, with no commitments. On top of that, smart speakers and other devices that include the Google Assistant can be used to listen to audiobooks as well. For instance, Subscribers can listen to an audiobook via the Amazon Echo smart speaker.

Aside from the expected ubiquity across devices and platforms, audiobooks will also be available without a subscription. Audio books can entertain many at once and can travel from the home to the vehicle or the gym and can digitally be heard through a variety of speakers. You can instruct it to stop reading the book after a certain period of time.

Weave reading into your day across multiple devices. Audiobooks only support English for now as well with Google Assistant. "The Google Assistant integration with audiobooks is available on Android, iOS, Chromecast, Android Wear, Android Auto or even your laptop". Since Google's service just launched, we can't say how prices will compare to Audible, but they will likely be very similar.

With audiobook support coming to Google Assistant, a good read is just a voice command away.

. There is also a scrubber bar, so you'll be able to move to a specific time and a skip button for jumping between chapters.

Over the weekend, Google Play inadvertently teased the launch of an audiobook store and listening feature.

Now, with audiobooks, Google has checked off another multimedia box it needs to compete with both Apple and Amazon.

Google began rolling out an audio book service on Tuesday that allows consumers to buy one book or subscribe to a service that will become available in 45 countries and nine languages.
